Top Things to Do in the Shkodra District: Culture, Nature & Relaxation

After exploring the Albanian coast for two weeks at the beginning of September, we plan to settle in Shkodra for a quieter stay before heading to the Albanian Alps. Nestled between lakes, rivers, and mountains, this northern city is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Albania.

We have decided to spend some time in Shkodra, planning excursions and alternating between cultural discoveries, nature, and moments of relaxation.

Here are the must-see spots we’ve prepared in advance, which we’ll adjust based on our whims and local recommendations…

📆 Arrival and First Immersion in the City

First mission: Stroll around and soak in the city’s atmosphere!
Shkodra is renowned for its artistic and cultural vibe, and we’re eager to immerse ourselves right away.

đź’ˇ Must see :
✔️ The historic center with its charming cobblestone streets and colorful façades
✔️ Sheshi Demokracia, the main square, perfect for enjoying a coffee on a terrace
✔️ Ebu Beker Mosque and St. Stephen’s Cathedral, symbols of Albania’s religious diversity
✔️ The Marubi National Museum of Photography, offering a fascinating glimpse into Albanian history through vintage photos 📷

🍽️ Feeling hungry? Don’t miss out on trying Tave Krapi, a traditional fish dish from Lake Shkodra.

🏰 Rozafa Castle and its panoramic view

You can’t visit Shkodra without heading up to  Rozafa Castle, which overlooks the city!

📍 2 km from the city center
💰 Entrance fee: around €3
⏳ Plan to spend 2-3 hours there

💡 Why are we excited to go? 🏰
✔️ To discover the tragic story of Rozafa
✔️ To enjoy the incredible views of the lake and mountains
✔️ To admire the sunset from the ramparts 🌅

🍹 After that? We’ll probably grab a drink at Komiteti – Kafe Muzeum, a bar-museum where you can try the famous Albanian raki. 🍾

🌊 Stroll Along Lake Shkodra & Visit the Village of Zogaj

Shkodra is bordered by the largest lake in the Balkans, and we definitely plan to make the most of it!

🚲 Cycling option: Ride along the shore to the village of Zogaj (10 km, a stunning route).
🚤 Boat option: Take a boat ride to explore the wild areas.

đź’ˇ Why do we want to go?
✔️ To enjoy a peaceful setting after the hustle and bustle of the city
✔️ To observe Dalmatian pelicans and other rare birds 🦩
✔️ To savor ultra-fresh fish by the lake (Except for Val, who hates fish)
✔️ To hike in the heart of nature 🌱
✔️ To swim, of course 👙

Excursion to the Mes Bridge & Hiking

Just 7 km from Shkodra, we’ll admire the Mes Bridge, a stunning Ottoman relic from the 18th century. It’s a perfect excuse for a hike along the Kir River in a pristine natural setting.

đź’ˇ Why are we going?
✔️ Because the bridge is an architectural masterpiece and photogenic
✔️ For a lovely nature walk
✔️ Because it’s a quiet and off-the-beaten-path location

🚣 Kayaking on the Buna River

Another nature experience we don’t want to miss: a kayaking trip on the Buna River, which connects the lake to the sea.

đź’ˇ What motivates us?
✔️ Paddling through protected wetlands and wild river islands
✔️ Observing local wildlife (migratory birds, fish…) 🦆
✔️ Discovering another side of the region, between land and water

After this active morning, we’ll treat ourselves to a delicious byrek and fĂ«rgesĂ«, comforting Albanian specialties.

đźš— Excursion to Cape of Rodon & Secret Beach

📍 About 50 km from Shkodra.

We’ll likely need a dose of the Adriatic before heading to the mountains! We’re planning an excursion to Cape of Rodon, a well-preserved natural site.

đź’ˇ What attracts us?
✔️ The impressive cliffs and Skanderbeg’s Castle
✔️ The chance of swimming at a secret, wild beach 🏝️
✔️ Enjoying one last moment by the sea before continuing our journey
