Albania, nestled between mountains and the Adriatic Sea, is an underrated gem waiting to be explored. With idyllic beaches, fascinating historical sites, and breathtaking landscapes, Albania is the perfect destination for a one- or two-week trip. Here are the must-sees to make the most of this Balkan treasure! 🌍
1. Tirana, the Vibrant Capital 🏙️
Start your journey in Tirana, the beating heart of Albania. Stroll through Skanderbeg Square, visit the Et’hem Bey Mosque and the National Historical Museum. Don’t miss the trendy Blloku district—once reserved for the political elite, it’s now buzzing with cafés, restaurants, and art galleries. Want to know more about Tirana ? Click here !

2. Berat, the City of a Thousand Windows
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Berat charms visitors with its Ottoman houses featuring white facades climbing up the hillside. Wander through the historic neighborhoods of Mangalem and Gorica, then hike up to the citadel for a stunning panoramic view of the city and the Osum River. See Orthodoxe churches, … We absolutely loved Berat !

3. Gjirokastër, the Stone City 🏰
Another UNESCO treasure, Gjirokastër is known for its stone-built houses and its imposing fortress. Visit the castle overlooking the city and explore the cobbled streets lined with Ottoman-era mansions.
We really liked it as well, personally I preferred Berat, it felt like there was more to do… but my husband preferred Gjirokaster !

4. The Albanian Riviera 🏝️
For dreamy beaches, head to the Albanian Riviera along the Ionian Sea. Ksamil and Saranda, with their crystal-clear waters and picturesque islets, are a must…but they are quite touristy. Looking for something less touristy ?
The villages of Dhërmi and Himara also offer gorgeous beaches and a laid-back atmosphere. Vlora is also a pretty city and it has big long beaches and interesting cultural places to visit. Read our article about Vlora here.

5. Llogara National Park 🌲🏔️
Nature lovers will enjoy the hiking trails of Llogara National Park. With pine forests and breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea, it’s the perfect place for a green getaway. The Llogara Pass, over 1,000 meters above sea level, offers stunning panoramic views. Read more here.
6. Butrint, a Major Archaeological Site 🏛️
Located near the Greek border and just a few kilometers from Saranda, Butrint is an outstanding UNESCO-listed archaeological site. Explore the ruins of an ancient city, including a Roman theater, public baths, and a paleo-Christian basilica, all set in a pristine natural environment. I recommend taking a guide for the tour to really enjoy the experience.
7. Shkodër, the Gateway to the Albanian Alps ⛰️
In northern Albania, Shkodër is one of the country’s oldest cities. Visit the Rozafa Fortress for breathtaking views over Lake Shkodër and the surrounding mountains. The city is also a great starting point for exploring the Albanian Alps. (learn more about Shkodër here)

8. Theth National Park 🏕️
Hikers will find paradise in Theth National Park. This untouched alpine landscape is dotted with waterfalls, crystal-clear rivers, and charming villages. Don’t miss the stunning Grunas Waterfall and Theth Church, a symbol of the village.
9. Lake Ohrid & Pogradec 🌅
Shared with North Macedonia, Lake Ohrid is one of the oldest lakes in the world. The Albanian town of Pogradec, situated on its shores, is perfect for a relaxing break with swimming and fresh fish dining.

10. Krujë, the Historic City 🏯
Perched on a hill, Krujë is famous for its medieval castle and Ottoman-style bazaar. Visit the Skanderbeg Museum, dedicated to Albania’s national hero, then browse the market for handmade carpets and local crafts.
